Even the texture of the light is important. Halogen in living areas where its warmth and controllability are needed; fluorescent fittings in a galley or engine room where light must be strong and shadow free.

Acoustics must be considered. In the last few years we have learned much about how to reduce the noise and vibration of essential services. Every item on the yacht which can resonate must be damped; acoustic pathways must be identified and blocked; rubber mountings, suspended bulkheads and insulated panelling must be used where appropriate. Needless to say it is not only the engine room which is insulated. Private cabins should remain private, with their occupants isolated from external noises.

I used to claim that these yachts are as comfortable as any home ashore, but my aim now is to give the owner the feeling that he is roughing it ashore rather than when he is afloat!
